I chose to watch a movie for Conexiones Culturales project. The movie I picked was Cinco de Mayo: La batalla which was about the battle of Puebla. It was directed by Rafa Lara who also made El Tamaño Si Importa which was comedy that came out in 2016. Cinco de mayo also featured several actors like Kuno Becker (Goal series), Angelica Aragon, William Miller and Jorge Luis Moreno. The movies showed how violent the war was and how the undermanned mexicans were able to beat the great French army. The movie was made in Mexico and it showed the struggles the mexican country faced during this time from having back to back wars and the government going broke because of this. So the mexican army was outnumbered compared to the French army that came to takeover their land. I learned a number of things from watching this movie. The 1st thing I learned was that in 1857-1860 was Mexico had a civil war between the liberals and conservatives who had different views on government, the pope and the military. The liberals ultimately won but conservatives were still bitter. Like i said the Mexicans were greatly out outnumbered compared to the French. 2000 mexican soldiers compared to 6000 French soldiers. The French also had help from Conservative mexicans so that boosted their numbers even more. The mexicans were able to beat the french because they knew their land better and the French thought it was going to be an easy battle so they weren't prepared. This movie has gave me a new perspective on Mexican history and the struggles that they faced. It also showed me how it was similar to the USA’s struggle to get their own independence from european countries. It was just weird how don't learn about this often and this is very important to
