On September 27th, 1821 Mexico had become it’s own country. This may not seem as if i were a big deal, but them becoming their own country led to many different cultures, traditions, and even holidays that only that country celebrates. Cinco De Mayo, Dia De Los Muertos, and The
Christmas season are some holidays that they have. These holidays are also celebrated in the U.S. but the way they celebrate them are different from the ones here in the states. As a matter of fact, sometimes people who do celebrate these holidays here in the states don’t even know the actual meaning behind them and only celebrate them as an excuse to party. It is two whole days to “celebrate” those who have sadly passed away. Some people who do not celebrate the holiday may assume that The Day of The Dead is on Halloween, but it is not. Typically, this celebration is broken up into two days. On the first day, which is November first, people pay their respects to the children who have lost their lives. On the second day, November second, is when people grieve for the adults who have died. It is a tradition to build altars in their home or in a public area for the person they have lost. In some cases, if the altar is built inside of a home, it is polite to let other people in to view their altar. This holiday is mainly celebrated in Spanish countries and if it is being celebrated in the U.S., it is most likely by a family that is of Spanish ethnicity. On the Day(s) of the Dead, it is common to see people paint their faces with the same skeleton each year. The reason behind this skeleton? La Catrina. IBT, an online website, and written an article about the Day of The Dead. Within this article, they wrote, “La Catrina was a selfish, greedy rich woman who did nothing to help the poor.” There was no reasoning behind her selfish ways, except for the fact that she had an abundance of money. Her greedy ways have costed her many years of humiliation. Each year, people paint their faces to look like a skeleton to mock her. La Catrina was not an actual person, she had originally been drawn in a painting by Jose Guadalupe Posada between the time era of 1910 and 1913.
