Describe a circumstance, obstacle or conflict in your life and the skills and resources you used to resolve it. Did it change you? If so, how?

Since I was a child, I have always been off by myself, too scared to talk to others and not wanting to interact with anyone. It was a huge problem that I knew had to be fixed; the summer before I started high school, I promised myself I would fix my shyness because it was holding me back. So I did just that, and the next four years of high school changed my life drastically. Middle school was rough, to say the least. I kept to myself most of the time. I had two close friends, but even opening up to them was hard. I wasn't involved at school, and didn't join any clubs or sports. I thought about it, but I just couldn't build the courage to do so. Constantly thinking about trying new things or talking to more people was stressful, so I never did.

I knew that this couldn't happen overnight, so I signed up for a speech class at my school. Starting out, it was terrifying. I dreaded getting up in front of everyone and speaking. I knew I was going to have to get comfortable in this kind of situation, so I asked my teacher for pointers to make speaking less terrifying every time that I had to present. The pointers ended up becoming so helpful that I didn't dread coming to speech anymore. I enjoyed the difference the class was making for me and my people-skills, so the following year (sophomore year) I took a theater class to further improve my speaking skills. We would perform plays in class, and I participated in all of them. I had small roles because I wasn't quite ready for big roles yet, but I really enjoyed performing.
