Even though not all of us are born here, being a Canadian is a part of our identity - one we share with thirty-three million people in the world. The stamp on our passport or our citizenship on paper does not solely define us because we are Canadian by heart, and our responsibilities, leadership and voice make us who we are.
To define citizenship, we would have to compare it to a warm blanket and a bonfire on a cold day to protect us from the pure-white snow and icy ground. It saves us from frostbites and the crackling wood would warm us down to our toes. Citizenship acts similarly by protecting us and our families in a vest. We are safe from any prejudice or inequality and we can stand up for our freedoms by raising our voices.

To become a good citizen, I must be informed, purposeful and active. To do these, I must be aware and gain knowledge of what is happening and who is involved in electoral processes. First, being an informed citizens means that one needs to be aware of the needs of the community as well as the regional, national and global level. They can work with the government and create better standards. An example of this is getting to know how the government and how it operates. Second, being a purposeful citizen means understanding one’s role in the community and government. It also means being aware of the perspectives of others and weighing oneself’s values and beliefs. An example would be hearing all the speeches for all the election candidates and making a tough decision of who to vote for. Third, being an active citizen means to apply the knowledge in a meaningful manner to act out our decision. Every unique person can contribute with their strengths and together, Canadians are merged with ethnic minorities. Every culture has their qualities and strengths, in Canada the nationalities have merged to become one. Canada is rich in heritage and culture that leads our way to the beginning of our native land. Every cultural day can be celebrated by song, dance and food, especially with the parades in cities. Symbols of maple leaf, maple tree, the beaver and the great seal of Canada represents an idea of what is country is like. People such as Terry Fox show the symbols of courage and perseverance that Canadians hold close to their hearts.
