Chapter 13 of Mark Hutters book was titled “City Families and Kinship Patterns”. In this chapter Hutter explains to the reader the rise of families in urban communitys as well as the rise in families in suburb locations. As you continue to read on Hutter seperates races and describes the urban African American community and the Urban Mexican community. This, in my opinon, is an importan distinction to make between the two. The reason being is because especially in places like LA, they tend to mix together and people don’t realize the way they live there lives is extremely different. The part that I relate to the most came when discussing the rise of suburbs. My family moved to the suburbs and we lived in one my entire life. My parents always use to explain to me how living in a small town is the best way to raise a family. The reason being was great schools, more room …show more content…
My entire life I have noticed how many African Americans and African American communities live in industrial areas. Then as I was reading the chapter I was given my answer. The cause of all these Northern cities getting a great jump in Black population was due to the great migration. This occurred between 1916 to 1919 and as many as 500,000 African Americans moved from the south to the north. Followed by the great depression and World War 2 this number increased even more. I feel though that it is not surprising considering many of these individuals struggled to stay afloat found refuge in cities by industrial areas. These cities tend to be cheaper to live in but unfortuantelly dirtier and more dangerous. Last year I took a health class and we watched a movie on the smog and dangerous chemicals these people breath in when living in this industrial cities. Sadly because its so cheap to live in these areas, the families don’t move and will continue to have to deal with these dangerous health
