Civil disobedience is the act of refusing to obey to certain laws, rules or procedures. This happens everyday around the world. Currently in social media, NFL players kneeling during the national anthem has been a popular act of civil disobedience. This innocent act of protest strongly relates to the short story Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. The famous football players kneeled to prove their point of racism across the country. They decided to not show pride for their country that is suffused with racism. Thoreau strongly agrees with these acts of protest. For example, in the story he expresses “Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it,” (Thoreau 389).
