The Texas Rangers were established to eliminate the Native American threat in Texas. The Rangers originally banded together after the Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna overthrew the Constitution of 1824. Their goal was for the Constitution to be reestablished in Texas. When they were first established they had a force of three 56 companies. After the Mexican War, Texas became a country and the Rangers fought to protect it. They protected Texas from many threats, like the Commanches, bandits, Mexican raiders, train robbers, and many more. One famous Texas Ranger was Captain John S. “Rip” Ford killed many Commanches and made towns safer. Even after the Civil War the Texas Rangers were still fighting. They were given trivial jobs. After the Fall of the Alamo, the rangers gathered cattle and evacuated refugees away from the Alamo. They served similar roles through out the war. One famous Texas Ranger was John Coffee Hays. John was born in Tennessee, but he moved to San Antonio after Texas gained independence from Mexico. In 1841, at age 23 John was promoted to Ranger captain. John achieved his fame from protecting Texas from both Comanche and Mexican raids. John defended the U.S. supply/communication chains during the Mexican War. If those chains were to break, then Mexico could have won the war. After his career being a ranger ended, John went on to have a career in politics. Another famous Texas Ranger was Samuel H. Walker. Samuel and other rangers were often outnumbered, but they held their ground against Native Americans and Mexican raiders. Samuel Walker joined Hay’s Ranger Company in 1844. At the battle of Walker’s creek, Samuel and 14 other Texas Rangers fought against 80 Comanche. The Texas Rangers came out victorious, but Walker was wounded. Walker made a recovery and became a Ranger Captain. Walker was killed by Mexican forces at Humantla in October
