Creating a culture of civility in a workplace starts with respecting others. Civility is defined as a show of respect for the dignity and importance of others (Cordon, 2013). Agreeing or disagreeing, respect should always be given. Showing respect will not always be smooth sailing. I strongly believe that every workplace should have a company seminar to train their employees on how to be respectful and polite to others. It is very important to be polite to others. According to Meinert, “Rude behavior can be costly for businesses. Workplace stress costs the U.S. economy billions a year, according to the American Psychological Association” (Meinert, 2017).
