Response 9 IN the past readings, the writers we studied were mostly influenced by religion. But the writers we have discussed this week focus more on Scientific Methods to prove things instead of the bible. The biggest question of the time was “what can you prove?” Setting up the right experiment is necessary to find precise evidences. Bacon followed three steps: 1-observe, 2-analyze and 3-draw conclusions. Bacon has been called the creator of empiricism (empiricism emphasizes the role of experience and evidence). He believed on an inductive method to do empirical observations. You needed evidence to get a conclusion. Galileo was the first person to use the telescope to look at the planets. One of his most famous experiments was when he threw 2 distinct objects from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to demonstrate that their time of descent was independent of their mass “Devise the right experiment, we will find the right evidence”. Pascal was educated by his father. Pascal's development of probability theory was his most influential contribution to mathematics. First used for gambling, today it is used in economics. The way he used probability to justify belief in God was very interesting; believing in God was everybody’s only choice if following probabilities. Hobes said people were nothing more than animals.
