The Suite Bergamasque consists of four different movements and the reason for it’s fame is the piano collection by Claude Debussy. The most known part of the entire Suite is the third movement also known as “Clair De Lune.” There is also a poem called “Clair De Lune” and the piece was named after it, as an innuendo to bergamask. Bergamask is a clumsy, primitive dance that was made up by the natives from Bergamo Italy, who were known as the Bergamask. The residents there were awkward with their movements, and the dance is linked to clowns and mockery. There is a compound triple meter throughout the piece, usually in 9/8 time. There is a contrast between the three dotted quarter notes to the dance movements, allowing Claude Debussy to express his music differently. This piece is the most significant because it is thought to be outside the box, and very unique. The placing of this piece in the movement is vital due to the fact that the third movement is known as the climax, the arrangement and magnitude of the piece is compelling. The structure of this musical composition is used to show how breathtaking it is, and how it allures the listener to focus all of the attention on what is being played. “Clair De Lune” builds and ranges from being surreal to being solid to substantial. The rhythm of “Clair De Lune” is smooth and compliments the work. He made it clear that even though this is the case, it was unintentional. The rhythm is alluring but is difficult for the listener to hang on to. When the rhythm becomes strong and clear it is noticeable and beautifully haunting. At school he had been inspired while mixing the song “Africa” and was playing around with the piano and ended up writing ‘Human Nature.’ Steve Porcaro worked with his band member David Paich with producer Quincy Jones on the Thriller album.
