The classical theory believes that the best way to prevent crime is through punishments that are swift, certain, and appropriately severe. Classical theorists, tend to focus primarily on the impact of punishments on crime. The goal of the classical theory is deterrence. Deterrence occurs when someone decides not to commit a crime because he or she fears the certainty, swiftness, and/or severity of formal legal punishment.
