In the article, Engaging Students in Classroom Guidance: Management Strategies for Middle School Counselors by Jill A. Geltner, Ed.S and Mary Ann Clark, Ph.D it offers an abundant amount of resource and ideas to help in administering a successful guidance units. This article addresses some successful strategies for preparation, managing environment, engaging students and managing behaviors. These are all important factors to consider when preparing a guidance unit.
The first key idea in this article that I will use in preparation of a guidance unit. Is the idea that teachers are a valuable resource of information. As the article states: Teachers can assist the middle school counselor in identifying topics that need attention, the time of day that will work best, and which classes can best accommodate classroom guidance (ASCA, 2003). Teachers are an excellent resource and with their direction I think that I can provide a successful guidance lesson one that addresses the needs of both the students and the teachers.

Managing classroom dynamics is huge when presenting a classroom guidance unit. It is important that I learn those teaching strategies that help in maintaining a effective classroom that is not out of hand. As a counelor I will focus on influencing a classroom by walking around in an attempt to keep everyone engaged in the topic presented. I feel it has a strong influence on the classroom experience when the teacher or counselor is engaged with the students and what is going on around them. In walking around the classroom, I feel it can help monitor students and keep them on task especially those in the back of the classroom. As a counselor I will draw on the humor technique, as I feel it is a really effective strategy to use. Having fun in the classroom can help keep kids attention to the lesson and make for a better learning
