The movie “Freaks” directed by Tom Browning, was made in 1932. Freaks opens with a crowd that is gathered around an animal pen, awaiting to hear what is inside, and the story behind it. All the audience knows at this point, is that the “monster” in the pen used to be a beautiful woman (the monster is hidden from the camera view). The story then proceeds to tell the audience that the monster was once a well-known trapeze artist named Cleopatra. The audience never sees any circus acts onscreen, the whole movie takes place out of the ring. Cleopatra, starts to take an interest in Hans, a small person who performs in the circus.
