Concept note for the Research study
Title - Climate change induced coastal hazards in Australia: An assessment of vulnerabilities and adaptation strategies for community resilience
Research problem
Climate change creates significant impacts in the Australian context, and coastal communities are severely vulnerable to the impacts. This is mainly due to sea level rising; according to the IPCC report in 2100 it will increase by 79 centimeters (Department of climate change, 2009). More frequent and severe natural hazards like flood, inundation, erosion, and storm surges will be a significant threat to the coastal community (Button et al.2013). Further, sea level rise causes significant changes to beaches, coral reefs, estuaries, wetlands and

The primary aim of the study is to assess possible coastal adaptation measures to face challenges by climate change induced coastal hazards. The level of natural hazards and observed changes have to be identified and measured as hazard frequency, magnitude, seasonality and trends. In the study, the vulnerability (depends on the level of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity) due to increased level of hazards has to be identified as an enhanced vulnerability by the climate change, subsequently it should be …show more content…
Timely changes of hazard magnitude, frequency and vulnerability of the coastal community will be identified.
Finally, based on the vulnerability analyses, adaptation level/ anticipated adaptive capacity will be identified and proposed. Further, strategies and variety of options to achieve anticipated adaptive capacity, their feasibility and effectiveness will be evaluated and proposed.
The intervention will help to identify existing adaptive capacity and anticipated adaptive capacity in the context of climate change. The findings will reveal local knowledge, use of traditional practices, need of new interventions, further research and policy recommendations. Overall economic and social burden by climate change induced hazards in coastal area will be assessed.
