This clinical rotation is differs from the previous rotations. I did my OB rotation at St. Anthony Hospital and compared to it, OU Children Hospital is different. At St. Anthony, we don’t have much opportunity to see birth of baby, but here at OU Children Hospital, the first thing I walked in is either in the middle of labor or that a labor is about to happen. This may due to the month. I guess more babies born in June than in May. On my first day, my preceptor and I took care of a patient with hematoma as a result from birth. This patient lost more than 500cc of blood. We tried to massage her fundus and blood keep coming out. We straight cath her and put in a Foley later on. My feet and back are stilled hurt from the walking and standing. My greatest challenge is not having enough OB skills and knowledge. I tried to observe my preceptor and adapt to her way of proceeding to thing. For example, my preceptor like to set up her room and she have a special way of setting up the room. I tried to listen and look at what she is doing and tried to do it myself. We ensure that all the equipment is available. One would assume that from our simulation that there will always be at least two nurses available during delivery, however, this is not always happen. At one point my nurse have to be the mother nurse and later be the baby advocate. When assessed the baby, we make sure that the baby is not left alone and that proper identifications are placed on both the parents and the baby. To prevent postpartum complication, we checked the patient’s fundus and massage it every 15 minutes for the first hour and we checked the baby’s vital signs every 15 minutes for the first hour.
