Controversy surrounds the film A Clockwork Orange for numerous reasons and it doesn’t take very long to realize why when watching it. This Stanley Kubrick epic is graphic for viewers to watch today so the way the viewers of the 70’s reacted to the themes that are woven into the plotline is understandable. In the film, the antagonist, Alex is the leader of a malicious gang that does as they please, as this quote puts it “Being the adventures of a young man, whose principle interests are rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven.” (Kubrick) which is illustrated eloquently from the first scene onward. Kubrick is not scared to push his limits which is an obvious reason why this movie is world renowned, along countless factors of his style of film from the soundtrack to the cinematography. Throughout the film, Kubrick makes the viewer feel for a character that is someone we should despise, thus toying with the idea of morality. There are a number of scenes throughout A Clockwork Orange that are strong examples of the film’s concepts, but easily the one that envelops the viewer quickly which is the Derelict Casino scene where a rival gang is about to rape a young woman, when Alex and his “droogs” show up for a fight. When you first see the group of on stage, it’s acted like footage of wild animals. Billy boy and his gang tear away the young woman’s clothes and toss her around and she is helpless. The gang is grunting as the woman resists, which has a resemblance to a pack of wolves attacking a deer. Billy boy and his gang were directed to act monstrous, but in more of an animalistic way, whereas upon the entry of Alex, he has a much more civilized evil. Again Kubrick reinforces this idea of moral side through the comparison of these enemies, neither of which are good but different
