Soon after the World War 2, tension began to grow between the Soviet Union and the United States. Many Americans viewed the Soviet Union with mistrust, suspicion, and fear. Americans also believed that the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism throughout the world. As a result, the United States spent most of their time on fighting the cold war.
To the United States communism was seen as a threat. One way the government reacted to the to the threat is by making sure the army was well prepared for the Cold War. For instance in document 4, we can see men training for an atomic explosion. The U.S. wanted to make sure that the military was ready for any obstacles thrown its way. However, these dangerous also came with a price. By having soldiers participate in trainings like this, they were exposed to many dangerous particles from the atomic blast. But on the positive side, they were ready for any atomic blast.
The threat of communism also affected the citizens of the United States. For example document 2 shows a temporary basement fallout shelter. The purpose of these shelters was to protect the people from a nuclear attack . The fallout can cause illness and death because of the radioactive particles. The U.S. wanted to make sure that there was no one who wants to brainwash the citizens. One example is in 1947, ten writers and directors were questioned if they were communist.
