What is communism? Simply stated, communism is where there is no private property. The Cold War was based on this political view. This war happened after World War II to 1991. There was no direct fighting between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Soviet’s goal was to spread communism around the world. Doing this would eliminate capitalism. Capitalism is where private property is allowed. Now, how did the the U.S. contain communism in the cold war? 3 good examples happened in West Berlin, Korea, and Cuba. A first good example of containment is when capitalists delivered shipments into West Berlin. The Soviets set up a blockade on June 27, 1948. It was then removed on May 12, 1949. Cuba becomes a communist under their new leader Fidel Castro. Because they are communists, the Soviet Union sends a large amount of troops, missiles, and nuclear warheads to Cuba. The U.S. spy planes notice nuclear missile sites quickly being built. Because of this, the United States announces quarantine on Cuba. Soon after, the Soviets remove the missiles. In a quiet agreement with the Soviet Union, the U.S. removes missiles from Turkey. This is also a good example of containment because the U.S. was able to peacefully negotiate (Document D) with the enemy. There was no major crisis. There were many other times in the Cold War that the U.S. tried to contain communism, like building missiles in Turkey. The examples stated are very clear. In West Berlin, flying in supplies to keep communism at bay. In Korea, saving over 50,000 people's lives by stopping North Korea’s expansion. Finally, in Cuba, peacefully negotiating without a crisis. This questions is significant because, if the U.S. did not contain communism, everything would be public. It’s important to understand the policy of containment because, the entirety of the war was about containing
