All the band Coldplay needed was a fanny pack, a sun hat, and high-waisted khaki shorts to complete the tourist starter pack. The popular band had the mindset of a tourist and took a bundle of stereotypes about India, traveled to Mumbai and threw them all in their music video "Hymn for The Weekend". With obvious slums, kids dancing the streets and Hindu gods they weren't far off from what ill- informed people typically believe India is all about. Coldplay unintentionally disrespected a culture due to lack of research. They took the basis of what they knew and went for it without considering consequences.
Coldplay is receiving backlash due to this music video, however, just time and effort could have saved them some of the trouble of having to hear the disapproving remarks. In the video they present the usual slums we tend to associate India with. Face it, most of us have watched "Slumdog Millionaire" and just automatically assumed all of India is Poverty stricken, however, it was a poor depiction of what India is going through economic wise. Since around 2000 there has been an Economic Boom that has affected the progress of the communities positively . India is growing in the technology business speedily, with a growth rate of 7.6. Coldplay seems to navigate their way past the beautiful cities of India and finds their way to one with decaying building and dirt roads. They showed India in its worse form. In my view they were trying to show that there are still parts of India that are going through a difficult time. Therefore, this highlighting that city to bring awareness and show that though they are in a tough place there is still happiness in this small part of the world despite the
