With collective intelligence there is an opportunity to grow in knowledge and problem solving.

On January 13, 2017, a laptop was stolen that was unencrypted, from a locked vehicle. The information involved had files on with the patient’s name, date of birth, address, medical record number and some clinical information. They have been working with the law enforcement but, still haven’t been able to recover the laptop.
For this situation what could of been done was to not have left the laptop in the vehicle even if it was locked. It should have been in a safe place or the person should have taken it with them. Also an encryption software should have been on the laptop. According to Sewell, “Encryption software should be a requirement for all portable healthcare agency computers and associated portable devices.” (p.391) Also they may want to make sure that their employees know how to encrypt files and drives. The hard drive or files could have been encrypted preventing patient information to be accessible. Since there has been no indication that the information has been accessed it means that the Wonderful Center for Health Innovation has a software that lets them know when someone has tried to access the information.

On January 27, 2017 some patients had received an email from doctor’s office that was not sent the office. The office immediately sent an email alerting the patients not to open the email. They also immediately took action to secure there Gmail account and hired a forensic IT specialist. The fraudulent activity was limited to their Gmail account only. There office email recipient list, which could have included the patients first and last name, and email address may have been exposed.
In this situation it was different from the other two. This was based on an e-mail attack.
