Something about the game gives me chills. The second I walked into the old Rural Retreat Middle School gym, holding my dad’s hand, I fell in love. Even though I was only 5 years old, that gym was the only place in the world I want to be. Being in that gym made me feel safe, loved, confident, and elite. My passion for basketball was not something that I found, it was something that found me. Ever since I was a little girl basketball was a part of me, I was surrounded by it. When I was in the first grade, my dad started his coaching career at Rural Retreat as the middle school girls’ basketball coach. I had the opportunity to go with him to every practice and every game. I was stuck on my dad’s hip like glue. Anywhere he went, I followed.
As my father’s dream of being the girls’ varsity head coach grew, my dream of playing on my own team grew as well. When I was in third grade Dad and I started an AAU team, which is a team that travels to different places on the weekends to play in tournaments. My team became so close. We came to be best friends; we were family. After that, played and grew together as a team every year. My dad and I planned and dreamed of the day my team and I will be playing on varsity.

The feeling of my first game playing school ball was incredible. I felt right at place, like I have been playing school basketball forever. It was finally my turn to be the athlete sitting on the bus, listening to music, getting butterflies in my stomach before the game.
