A culmination of events throughout my life has prepared me for medical school and a life of service. I did not discover my interest in medicine until the summer after 10th grade. Some of my friends were riding scooters down a hill and one of them lost control, running into a guardrail. Initially, my injured friend went into panic mode as he lay on the ground with an open chest wound. During this time emergency transportation was called for and I called my mother, who is a family doctor. She gave me directions on how to care for my friend while we waited for professional help. It was not until my friend was safely at the hospital that I was able to reflect on the experience. I realized that in those initially moments caring for my friend, I was calm, (adjective (carefully?)) following my mother instructions, and talking my friend through what was happening. It was this love of travel and cultural study mixed with my desire to work in the medical field that led me to major in Biology and International Studies. After medical school I would like to be able to take time to travel abroad and work with an international aid organization. After my freshman year of college, I was able to get first hand experience as I traveled with a group from Cure International to Lusaka, Zambia. During this time I was able to gain a new perspective on health care. One of the largest differences between Zambia and the United States is access to health care and despite these circumstances most of the patients maintained a calm and happy attitude. The patients, their families, and their stories were inspiring and reaffirmed my desire to enter the field on medicine and continue to be a motivating force as I pursue this
