COSHH – COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health. Came in in 2002 and is a united kingdom and is a legislative element that states general requirements on employers to protect employees and other persons from hazards of substances used at work by risk assessment, Control of exposure, health surveillance, and incident planning. There are also duties on employee’s to take care of their own exposure to hazardous substances and prohibitions on the import of certain substances in the European economic area. My example of where COSSH it used would be for when in a leisure centre when dealing with chlorine. Chlorine is a very dangerous substance when not treated with care, in a leisure centre chlorine is used to clean the pool and make it suitable to swim in, when dealing with chlorine the person who deals with it must be very careful and they must make sure that they use the correct amount of chlorine to make the pool safe to swim in. This is where COSHH comes in, introducing COSHH into the leisure centre will ensure that the leisure centre gets a specialist in to deal with the chlorine and after using the chlorine the leisure centre must ensure that the chlorine substance is locked away and is not available for anyone to use, so that the public or even the leisure centre staff cannot get to it and only the specialist can.
PPE – personal protective equipment refers to protective clothing helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the athlete’s body from injury. The hazards are addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards and airborne particulate matter. Protective equipment may be worn for job-related work-related safety and health purposes, as well as for sports and other recreational activities. "Protective clothing" is applied to traditional categories of clothing, and "protective gear" applies to items such as pads, guards, shields, or masks, and others. The employers of the company that are supplying the equipment must make sure that all equipment is working properly and none of it is broken. Types of PPE
My example of where PPE is used would for a cricket coach. When playing cricket no matter how good a quality you must always where protective equipment. When you are the batsman in cricket you have to wear a helmet, gloves, pads, box and all of these are heavily padded, you are so well padded to because the bowl when bowled at you is incredibly dangerous. this is where PPE is introduced because it is very dangerous when using a hard ball the, it is the coaches responsibility and role to ensure that the equipment being used correct but also to ensure the equipment is not broken or in any way damaged. This is comes under there duty if care to ensure that the participants are safe a tall time.
HSWA – the health and safety at work act is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain.
