Wouldn't free college be the best? Right? Actually, that’s wrong. It could be pretty great, although, it would cause a lot of issues. The money for college tuition has to be paid by someone, and if the students are no longer paying it, the government would have to raise taxes in order to supply money for college tuition. If most people have college degrees, then it could lower the value of a college degree, making it comparable to a current high school diploma or equivalent. The less college costs, the more people will be able to attend, which means there will need to be more professors to teach the amount of students, which will decrease the salary of a college professor. The only way college tuition could be free is if the government paid for it, which could raise taxes, decrease the value of a college degree, and lower salary for college professors. If a student decides to go to a community college, that would not cause as much of an increase on tax dollars as it would if a student decided to go to a larger, more expensive university. Currently, American tax dollars only pay for public schools kindergarten through twelfth grade. If the government decided to offer free college tuition to students, taxes would raise dramatically in order to pay for the several years of expensive universities. On the contrary, veterans should get benefits from the government concerning college tuition, as former president Barack Obama stated “. . . And as a new generation of veterans comes home, we owe them every opportunity to live the American Dream they helped defend.” (Obama). Veterans should be able to live that “American Dream” Obama talked about, the government should help support those that served America
