CT- Mirror Mass. Bay except allowed more freedom to non-church members, like voting
PA- refuge for Quakers

Chesapeake- by “joint-stock” companies which are business organizations in which scores of people could invest without fear of bankruptcy (self-governing). VA, GA, NC & SC became royal colonies- Crown appointed the governor & a council to rule. The King owned the colony. MD was a proprietary colony.
Joint stock companies financed the initial request and the colonies were very self- governed. They made a high amount of $ by working as individual farmers & surplus food unlike the plantation colonies.
Proprietary colonies, such as PA, NY, MD, and DE were basically land grants from the England Government. Individuals were awarded huge amounts of land that they would govern usually for political or financial favors. The colonial governors reported directly to the king. Colonies like NC, SC and NJ started as proprietary & became royal.
Economy prospered from growing golden leaf tobacco, rice & indigo. Strong aristocrat atmosphere. Virginia- 1619 began House of Burgesses. Land holdings became the key to $. Direct democracy (self-governed)
Natural resources most valuable since farming was difficult due to poor soil & bad weather. Made $ from lumber, trade (sea access), & rum. (Triangular trade). Govt- Solely theocracy although & church attendance mandatory. RI- church and govt separate & religious freedom
PA- extremely liberal govt & made $ from agriculture & water access lead to trade. NY/NJ- Legislative govt with Assembly of Representatives & governor/ council. DE/NY/NJ made $ from iron, lumber, trade, & agriculture. DE- proprietaries appointed governor & how legislature was organized.
Depended on labor from slavery & white indentured servants. In Chesapeake, men to woman ratio were 7:1. Women regarded highly, lots of remarriage however they weren’t allowed in political processes. High mortality rate for men. Boys studied in fall and worked in winter. Plantation owners very involved in their business. Aristocratic and middle class male children were home schooled by tutors until teens
Most not religiously tolerant; colonies mostly Puritan. Woman weren’t allowed in political business. Mayflower Compact of 1621 set up an independent attitude in the society. Puritans believed in predestination & only elect had conversion. Life expectancy higher here and higher birth and literacy
