Similarities and Difference Between the Coltan Rush in Congo and the Gold Rush in BC

There are in fact many similarities and differences between the Coltan Rush in Congo and the Gold Rush in BC. In terms of similarities and differences, this essay will compare: its reason for value (purpose), its method of extraction, its impact on: people, the environment, and the economy, as well as further action that should/should’ve been taken.

Both the Coltan Rush in Congo and the Gold Rush in BC have the same general purpose, the generation of money. The Coltan Rush launched as certain people wanted to gain more income. In fact both metal rushes have caused quite a lot of stir as innocent people have died such as the First Nations inhabitants during the gold rush, and the innocent families/workers/bypassers of the coltan rush. Both groups are also likely lacking in food/nutrition. The only real winners were those who controlled. However, as for the Congo Coltan Rush, it’s a fact that the women of Congo have been victims of sexual harassment, rape, and abuse to satisfy those who control the trade. There are also many cases of child labour. Miners (a.k.a. slaves) have also been forced to work in horrible and dangerous working conditions while getting paid next to nothing. The people of Congo have also been impacted in such a way in which many of them have AIDS, HIV, and/or gonorrhea. On the flip side, those of the Gold Rush kept their own self made income from their extractions of the metal but with some thefts and raids. However, there may have also been sexual harassment during the gold rush as well. In terms of the environment, both fights for precious metals have caused the environment to be one that is very dangerous, and unsafe due to wars and rebels. The factors of economy is also similar as both groups don’t give their money to the government.
