Growing up I was surrounded by the media but unable to notice it at the time. I lived in Trinidad from age 1-7, we used radios a lot playing reggae whenever we can. There was radios in every room in the house generally we were supposed to shut the music off around 6pm, and it would be on as early as 8 am for the local news and traffic reports. There was a TV in the living room but being a young kid in Trinidad we explored outside more than staying inside. If we were to watch TV we were allowed to watch anything we wanted. The only restriction was we could not watch TV from 6-8 because that’s when the local news came on TV. We never had a computer in Trinidad because it was too expensive for us, we had no interaction with the internet.
Moving to Boston was a drastic change because the media outlet was ten times bigger than it was in Trinidad. When I was 8 and lived in the inner city with my older cousin and she just had recently had two kid so her rules were different than the ones in Trinidad. She had a TV with cable in every room of the house but we never really watched TV in the living room. We had also had a computer with internet but it was in her room and whenever we wanted to use it she was supervising what we were doing. We were only allowed to use the computer after we had completed our homework and only for about 45 minutes. In my bedroom I had a TV with cable but my cousin since she had 2 young boys had a parental lock on the TV so we could not watch any program that was past PG13. Soon I figured out the parental password after numerous guessing and I now had the freedom to watch whatever I wanted as long as
