Coming of age is a process in which someone gains more knowledge and maturity to become a better person. One can go through coming of age in many different ways, such as through events or other people. In the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Marji goes through many different coming of age experiences as a child during the Islamic Revolution. The most important aspect of Marji’s coming of age is when she gains more knowledge about her own rights and of the revolution, which she gets through important events in her life, most importantly when she learns more about the revolution and when she realizes how to treat other people.

After her mother scolds her about trying to attack Ramin, Marji tells herself, “‘You have to forgive! You have to forgive!’” (Satrapi 46). Marji learns a valuable life skill in this scene: forgiving. She learns that she shouldn’t punish people for things others have done, and gains more knowledge. This is a very important skill to have, since later in life she will have to give forgiveness a lot. Likewise, when she wants to approach Pardisse about her father, she approaches her and stops because she “knew right away but I didn’t dare ask” (Satrapi 85). This scene demonstrates Marji’s understanding of self control, which is an important part of growing as a person. So, the life skills that Marji gains show her coming of age. These events in Marji’s life illustrate her coming of age. When Marji learns more about her rights and gain life skills, she takes large steps in becoming a woman. Satrapi is showing the readers that anything, even small events, can have a large impact on you as a person and your maturity. People should try to get the most out of their experiences, so that they can learn more and continue the coming of age process, which never truly
