The metaphor of “coming out” refers to LGBT people’s way of making their sexual orientation or gender identity known. “Coming out” provides a sense of relief to the person along with the opportunity for members of society to understand and comprehend. For youth, “coming out” can possibly correlate with negative impacts; however, the benefits of “coming out,” related to the mental health, can promote healthy outcomes. “Coming out” as a sexual minority can be intimidating along with unsettling because the person does not the result of their actions. Controversially, studies of LBGT youth found that youth who had peer and parental support after revealing their sexual identity had lower levels of depression symptoms and higher self-esteem. For example, LGBT clubs within schools are student-led organizations that encourage and support LGBT students. (Russell & Fish, 2016) Therefore, the purpose of the clubs is to decrease stigma, prejudice and harassment in schools. (2016) LGBT clubs can serve as a resource for youth who are “coming out,” and are likely to reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviors along with other actions, relating to mental health, due to the support. (2016) Moreover, teachers can also help support LGBT youth by fostering positive relationships with youth. Teachers can create an inclusive environment and use inclusive curriculum to promote acceptance and student learning within the classroom. (Russell & Fish, 2016) For example, if LGBT youth feel safe and included in a classroom setting, student culture and education may have an increased outcome of success.
