Coming To America Challenges

When my parents and I first came to the United States on February ??, 2002, they knew almost nothing of the language, and the only people they knew were my aunt and my cousin. Today, they know enough about English to hold a conversation, my two brothers who were born here are doing well in school, and I am preparing to apply for colleges. I have had many different experiences and many different challenges I had to face since arriving to the United States. Some of those challenges come from being an immigrant in the United States that just recently has been approved for the DACA. Others come from losing the little family I’m in contact with here in America. However, the challenges I have faced and the experiences I have had have all contributed to who I am today. With no proper paperwork, my parents couldn’t find many jobs. My mother had only fished up to sixth grade and my father part of college, so their lack of education made it even more difficult to find jobs. They were also constantly sending money to my family in Guatemala to try and help them. As a result, most of my clothing were hand-me-downs and my had very little expensive toys and gaming consoles. Most of my family were still in Guatemala, and the only family outside of my brothers and parents were my older cousin and my aunt. Every year, my grandfather and grandmother would visit, but eventually they passed away when I was in elementary school and in middle school respectively. I was too young to truly understand my grandfather's passing, but the passing of my grandmother marked a brief period where my grades slipped. I recovered however and continued to work hard in school. When I came to high school, School Lane was brand new, and as a result, it didn’t have many programs or AP classes. There were not
