Coming to the USA when I was fifteen was a huge change in my life. It was a lot of firsts for me. I got on a plane for the first time, left my state for the first time, and saw white people for the first time. Yes, I was ecstatic. Well who wouldn’t be? America was portrayed as a land full of milk and honey in my country, Nigeria. But I was scared too; I’d to leave all my loved ones behind – my best friend, my other close friends, my grandmas, my acquaintances, and even those I just said hi to. I left a familiar place to come into a strange land, a place where I knew no one – except for my family of course. Before I came here, I was in my last year of high school, so I thought I was going to be placed in 12th grade and then go to college, but life had other plans for me….
Two months after I arrived in the States, I went to the International Newcomers Center with my older brother, Josh to register for school. Nervous, I woke up early that morning and had to change my attire so many times since I was going for a professional look. I finally decided on a green dress shirt and black pants. Just to explain further, we came here through a Visa lottery and the main reason my parents came here was for us, my siblings and I to have an excellent chance at education. You see, my parents weren’t able to accomplish such a thing for themselves. I later realized that my grumpiness was useless and being here, in the States was a chance in a lifetime. Coming here, I realized, gave me the chance of fulfilling a dream I thought was hopeless – going to a reach college! I may’ve thought coming to America was the worst thing that’d ever happened to me, but it was the greatest thing I could’ve ever asked
