Communication in today’s society is seemingly so easy and powers relationships, decisions, and reasoning. However, a simple miscommunication can lead to a completely different turn of events. Today, communication impacts our ability to effectively complete tasks and articulate thoughts; this communication, or lack thereof can greatly impact the end result of a conflict. The works we studied this year highlight the importance of communication and how the presence or absence of communication can drive or hinder progress in a situation. Communication is an especially prevalent theme in Macbeth, All American Boys and A Separate Peace, affecting characters’ mental health, relationships, and situational outcomes. Lady Macbeth even proclaims to the Doctor and Gentlewoman, “here’s the smell of blood still. All/the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little/hand,” (5.1.53-55) when they believe she is going crazy, displaying how the lack of communication regarding her actions is taking a toll on her mental health. It is these feelings that eventually lead to the Lady’s taking of her own life. This damage from lack of communication is also apparent in Rashad in the novel All American Boys and his thought process while being unjustly restrained by Officer Galluzzo. While being held against the ground, “[Rashad’s] brain exploded into a million thoughts and only one thought at the same time - please don’t kill me,” (Kiely and Reynolds 23) this is not at all a healthy thought and this situation is traumatizing for anyone
