Effective Communication
Introduction
Communication is defined as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior (merriam-webster.com, 2014). Communicating through the use of language is used by individuals and groups to share information about feelings, ideas, and common goals. When people interact through communicating, active listening is an important key related to understanding the verbal and nonverbal communication that is taking place. Knowledge of nonverbal communication with others allows for understanding the context of language use in verbal communication.
Communication between People
Interacting through the use of language is used by individuals and groups to share information about feelings, ideas, and common goals. Without verbal and nonverbal interaction, understanding the context and meaning of a message is not possible. Language and word use are the focus of verbal communication. This type of communication can be done in many different ways, such as, one on one, over the phone, and through the use of modern day technology. Expression of feelings and emotions are the components which describe nonverbal communication. An example of nonverbal interaction is how a statement made by varying one’s pitch, volume, rate, and word stress will imply anger, excitement, or dominance. This type expression is known as vocal expression (Engleberg & Wynn, 2013), which is one way an individual can convey feeling or emotion through a message that is intended for a receiver.

Knowledge of Nonverbal Communication
Knowledge of nonverbal communication allows understanding the context in which a person uses verbal communication. When attempting to understand the nonverbal communication of an individual, personal appearance, facial expression, eye contact, and physical expression are a few of the key elements that dictate how a message is perceived by a receiver of the message.
