Communication through social media involves the interaction of numerous people on a daily basis, interaction in the form of post range from pictures, typed commentary to memes or a combination of these postings. A recent posting by two friends and nurse colleagues, interestingly, showing one behind the other in my news feed, spoke to my philosophy regrading nursing. Weaving support of my firm belief, nursing is a quilt of care, sewn together by the many people involved, patients, families, doctors, ancillary services and the nurses stitching the quilt of care together.
With permission granted to share this information, I was fortunate as a nurse to provide care for the parents of one of the nurse friends who posted the meme. In providing diabetes care for her parents, the tapestry of care involved clinic care; while they continued to live independently, assisted living and eventually coordination of care in a nursing home. Just as social media involves interaction among people, so does providing health care. During the course of weaving or the collaboration of care, skills were continually built, changed, adapted, and negotiated among my patients, family, doctors and the other team members providing care.
