In order for the educational journey of a student to be as successful as possible, the communication between teachers and parents is crucial. By embedding multiple means of communication, particularly regarding a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development has a significant impact on students overall school experience. As I determine the degree to which each communication tool provides proper feedback, I will also analyze how these tools follow each child’s own unique experience and growth. The tools I will be reviewing include, The Weekly Howl, Illuminate (Parent Portal), and Parent Conferences. At Lemon Grove Academy, we provide our students with weekly newsletters to keep parents up-to-date with what is happening in school. The Weekly Howl is distributed every Tuesday during the advisory period. Teachers take the first ten minutes of class to go over the content in the newsletter. It is at this time that students are informed about, the school calendar, important dates, fun fact, inspirational quotes, news from the nurse and guidance counselor, and finally positive recognition for students going above and beyond in their classes. Additionally, the parent portal gives access to monitor student attendance, communicate with teachers, stay current on homework, projects, and deadlines, and view contact information of school faculty and staff. Having a parent portal is very useful from a school administrator’s perspective as well. It provides administrators a single point of reference to all the school-related activities of a student.
