1. List two specific goals for the day? (Address health assessment, psychomotor skills, and communication techniques/phases)
For my first community experience, I will be hosting a Mini-Clinic at the Sunrise Circle Apartments from 1300-1500. Two specific goals I retain for tomorrow’s community experience include: Enhancing my communication skills and addressing health assessments. Related to communication skills, I want to focus my attention of both the verbal and nonverbal communication skills of the Native American population, as a great deal of Native Americans reside at this apartment complex. Coming into this community experience, I was informed that the two hours will be spend performing basic health screenings, such as vital signs, blood sugar checks, basic wound care, and vision screenings. I will explain to the clients that the basic health screening remains as a basic assessment as nurse uses to fain insight into his or her patient’s condition. When performing the basic health screening, specific to what each client requests, I will walk the client through what I am doing, to assist in his or her understanding. While performing care, I can explain that while the basic health screening cannot tell a nurse specifically what is wrong with a patient, it does assist in narrowing down the assessment to specific body systems – areas of concern. Not only will I be improving my skills through practicing, but I will also be teaching the clients about their health at the same time. Throughout the day, I will explain the purpose of a health assessment, how one is performed, and what results it can supply to a nurse. If a client has a question, I will answer to the best of my ability, or request assistance if I am unsure. When researching Sunrise Circle apartments, I learned that this location entails 35 furnished studio apartments for the chronically homeless (25 apartments), and individuals who are disabled due to serious mental illness, substance or alcohol abuse (8 apartments). This apartment is a Native American Connections housing unit located in Phoenix, Arizona.
Next, I searched for health issues that specifically relate to the Native American community, which I should be aware of to provide adequate care. I learned that five health issues directly linked to Native Americans include: Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, unintentional injuries, assault/homicide, intentional self-harm/suicide, and chronic lower respiratory diseases. With this knowledge, I now know what health screenings I should focus on and where to implement the greater deal of education to the
