Community In The Odyssey

Community is what drives people to continue and is useful and important part of life. A little while ago, my group and I were tasked with examining and explaining book 3 of The Odyssey we all decided on roles for each person, I was the facilitator. We had to work together in our community to get the job done. In The Odyssey by Homer, the text also relates to the value of community and the importance of community. A community is a group of people who either work with one another to complete a task or a group of people who may live near one another and support each other in their endeavors. In The Odyssey, the mythical Greek gods all have a tight and working community in which they talk over problems and discuss the mortal and immortal worlds. Also, in The Odyssey, the idea of xenia shows how the Greeks were very welcoming in their communities. All of the Greek kings and their kingdoms, such as King Nestor, King Menelaus, even the Cyclops our communities that have people that live together and will support each other. In book 4 King Menelaus remembers Odysseus and their community of Greeks, when they were fighting the Trojans, “...just now I was talking about Odysseus, remembering how he struggled, suffered, all for me…” (Homer Book 4 167-168) This shows how the Greeks, even though they are separated into many individual communities, are one huge community looking out for each other and try to do what is best for the community. In these communities we all support each other and work with each other. In the outside world, communities can be found everywhere. Neighborhoods, schools, teams, towns, states, countries, and even the entirety of the human race, are all in one way or another communities. They all have goals that they work to achieve. For example, Princeton High School is made up of a community of staff and students that all work to ensure that the students are able to get the best education they can possibly get.
