The first organization that I wanted to focus on for my community profile was Giving the Basics. I first heard of this organization in my undergraduate career and immediately was impacted by their mission to provide health, dignity, and opportunity to thrive to those who are less fortunate. I chose to focus on this specific organization because it provides hygienic support to families and students in need that may lack these resources. Currently, I have students that do not bathe or brush their teeth everyday due to the lack of resources at home. This often leads to humiliation of the students because they have body odor that may turn other students off to interactions with them.

Giving the Basics provides a variety of hygiene products to over one hundred thousand students a month in the Kansas City metro area. This is done so by donating their supplies to the nurse’s offices in the schools. Students are able to brush their teeth at home and no longer get cavities. Teenage female students are provided with pantiliners and males are provided with deodorant. Growing up, I constantly donated to United Way and became interested in the organization when several of my good friends began working for them after graduation. United Way emphasizes healthy beginnings by setting a goal of all children being born healthy and have the social, emotional, and developmental supports needed to thrive in their foundational years. This is achieved by connecting vulnerable families in the Kansas City region to supports that optimize the beginning years for young children prenatal to age three – the first 1,000 days of life. United Way partnered with Children’s Mercy Hospital, Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and other home visiting programs in the region to help achieve their goal of healthy
