Frank Mccourt's memoir “Angela’s Ashes” is a rough long journey about all the hardships during the great depression. Frank, whom’s point of view the story is told in, shows how awful life was in Limerick and how he coped with all of the drama and chaos in his life while growing up. In the novel version young Frank was always intrigued with old-wives-tales and the songs his mom and neighbors would sing when they were joyful or distraught. The movie, however; has an absence of the songs and poems Frank would listen to and sing along with. He used songs to express how everyone was feeling and what emotions were to be felt by the audience. There are many differences and some similarities in the film and novel versions of Frank's memoir. To start off, the differences in the novel are drastic, it is packed full of songs from short to long and merry or somber, the novel includes all types. Frank’s passion for songs and poems when he was a kid were very strong. He believed everyone had their own song. “Clap hands, clap hands… And Mammy has none.”(McCourt 29). The novel connected and explained Frank's life more effectively than the film. The film did get rid of a lot of the exaggerated scenes to keep the story more realistic. The novel still came through and really connected and gave more emotions that we didn't get to experience in the film adaptation of “Angela's Ashes”. The two versions compared, the novel was the best at showing Frank's point of view of the story and the awful life in Limerick and how he coped with all of it. “Angela's Ashes” was an emotional rollercoaster, but in the end, the novel came out on top. Take this learning experience and try using more motifs and symbols in stories. This is an amazing memoir. It is recommended, anyone who loves reading or wants to learn more about literature to encourage them to read this
