Jonathan Edward’s first stanza of his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” can accurately convey his overall tone and writing style; his use of fear as a persuasion technique is reflected upon his strong and dramatic wording. In comparison to Anne Bradstreet’s poems, “Upon the Burning of Our House” and “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” their works differ in many ways. The twain authors originate from proper Puritan backgrounds, thus the main topics of their writings center around their religious beliefs.
