Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes Right now there are many elderly people being cared for in either nursing homes or assisted living centers. Typically, the residents of these homes are well over the age of sixty and cannot care for themselves to the best of their ability. Assisted living centers and nursing homes provide care for the elderly in similar yet different ways. Being under the care of either facility greatly depends on how much attention the patient needs. There are both benefits and negative results when choosing between assisted living or nursing homes. According to the state health facts website, there are 15,622 nursing homes in the United States. Nursing homes, or nursing facilities, are for seniors who require twenty-four-hour monitoring and/or medical assistance. The patients in these particular facilities usually suffer from severe physical or mental illnesses that prevent them from being able to care for themselves. In a nursing home, the residents are under twenty-four-hour supervision and care. The staff consists of skilled medical doctors, nurses, and physical therapists that constantly attend to the patients. There is a licensed physician on the premises at all times who provides health management and support. Although they need to be cared for constantly, the residents also take part in activities that the home creates. Likewise, assisted living centers have their benefits as well. Instead of their residents needing constant care, they only need to be assisted since they can manage on their own. Because of this, the staff does not have to be as skilled.
