The Epic Superhero
What could Batman, Wonder Woman, and Beowulf possibly have in common? Batman is the fearless protector of Gotham, and Wonder Woman is a brave warrior princess. So, where exactly does Beowulf fit in? Actually, Beowulf has the same qualities of these two superheroes, and of other heroes in comic books or movies. He is selfless and brave just like a comic book hero. He is also strong in a way that only a hero could be. Also, he has a similar sense of justice to Batman or any other hero that wants to help their people for the greater good. Beowulf, a true Anglo-Saxon hero, is strong, brave, and has a sense of duty and justice, much like modern-day heroes.

Not every ordinary person can fight crime for the sake of their people, it takes a sense of justice to do what’s right. Bruce Wayne was an ordinary man with a sense of duty, which led to Bruce becoming Batman. Much like Batman, Beowulf longs to help his people when they are in danger. “And quickly commanded a boat fitted out, / Proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king, / Would sail across the sea to Hrothgar, / Now when help was needed most.” As soon as Beowulf hears about Grendel, he sets out to defeat him, since his sense of duty is calling him. Later, when the dragon attacks Beowulf’s people, he immediately plans on revenge because he knows he has to do what is right for his people, even if he will die trying. Beowulf’s sense of duty and justice show that Beowulf is even more like a modern-day hero. Obviously, Beowulf and the modern-day hero have many similarities. Beowulf demonstrates superhuman strength like Thor, bravery like Spiderman, and a sense of duty like Batman. Beowulf is clearly a superhero, not just an Anglo-Saxon hero. In fact, if Beowulf had not been an epic poem, the story would’ve made for a great comic
