Belgian Draft vs. American Quarter Horse Most people will say “A horse is just a horse, they are all the same,” but that is not the case. There are hundreds of breeds of horses, and they each have similarities and differences. For instance, Belgian drafts and American Quarter Horses are both breeds of horses but they differ in appearance, temper, and style of work. Belgian Drafts and American Quarter Horses have dramatic differences in appearance. Most Belgian Drafts are seventeen to nineteen hands tall. A purebred Belgian is either chestnut or roan colored with a light colored mane and tail. Most the time the mane and tails are cut short where they do not get caught in harness used for pulling. They are considered the heaviest type of draft horse, and can weigh more than two thousand pounds. In contrast, American Quarter Horses range from fourteen to sixteen hands tall. They can be any color from black to palomino and are mostly seen with long manes and tails. Sometimes they are braided for competitions and style. The average American Quarter Horses weighs a little over one thousand pounds.
