The short stories “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet and “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury have many distinct similarities. Both authors seemed to fear the abilities of technology and what the human race would do with the technology they created. Humans destroy things and the two stories take place in a post apocalyptic world where people caused their own downfall. In the short story “By the Waters of Babylon” the main message or moral of the story is a warning about using new technology, such as weapons, without thinking or analyzing the consequences that could come from the devices. This message can relate to people in today’s world very easily. The atomic bomb is a good example, a genius invention that could stop wars but the damage it causes is horrendous. Similarly to “By the Waters of Babylon”, Ray Bradbury’s story “There Will Come Soft Rains” is also about humans and technology. However Bradbury writes more about not relying on technology so much. The house that people lived in did everything for them so if people ever had to leave their houses, then they had no idea how to do anything. In the story humans are eradicated from the earth, by each other, and the world just keeps on spinning as if nothing ever happened. Without humans the earth would flourish no global warming, no endangered or extinct species, and no deforestation. The poem by Sara Teasdale is about this same idea, that without humans nature would maintain completely intact. In the poem it says “Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree if mankind perished utterly”, which is about nothing on earth caring about the disappearance of humans because of the amount of damage people
