Similar to Freudian psychology, Carl Jung addresses the different aspect of the unconscious and conscious mind. His Neo-Analytic theory highlights the parts of the mind as the conscious ego, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. The conscious ego is described as the core of self-awareness and its purposes are to make a person aware of thoughts and feelings the outside environment. Comparable to Freud’s theory, the personal unconscious consists of contemplations that are not outwardly expressed, but not threatening or socially unacceptable. A crucial part of the personal unconscious is what Carl Jung describes as a complex. A complex is a set of feelings or attitude toward a specific notion. Regarding Dexter, he does not particularly have feelings toward something, but rather a lack of feelings. Thus, demonstrating that he must have a severe inefficiency in his personal unconscious. Dexter has to constantly put on a mask to cloak his sociopathic personality. He has rehearsed different types of emotions so that in the real world people cannot suspect any discrepancies in his behavior. He was taught to do this by his father so that the police, for killing, would never catch him. Finally, the last archetype that fits with Dexter is the hero archetype. This archetype has a positive and negative side to it, specifically the positive side fights evil and the negative side opposes goodness (Carducci, 2009). Dexter personifies both the positive and negative sides of the hero archetype because on one hand he rids the world of rapists and murders, but on other he himself kills people.
