One’s identity can alter, but a person’s true self will never change. The three works by William Shakespeare, Daniel Keyes and John Wyndham named The Taming of the Shrew, “Flowers for Algernon” and “The Chrysalids” challenge the different society impressions of a perfect human. The protagonists in the three works had experienced similar treatment by others due their “abnormal” character, intelligence and abilities. In The Taming of the Shrew, the society’s impression of women is mild and gentle, and the protagonist named Katherina who is a bold woman is forced to change into a gentle woman. The protagonist in “Flowers for Algernon” named Charlie has learning disabilities, he is not treated equally as other people because of his low intelligence. David, the protagonist of “The Chrysalids” has the ability of telepathy. …show more content…
His mother has high expectations and wants him to be smart, so he had a surgery to become smarter, but he changes back to the old Charlie with learning disabilities at the end of the story. Many people does not treat him as a human being and would laugh at him. There is a scene when Charlie’s doctor, Professor Nemur who perform his surgery says that he created him. Charlie feels offended because Professor Nemur does not treat him as a human being and only treats him as an object for experiment. Another example in the story that shows Charlie being treated differently is when he goes to a bar with Frank and Joe who are the his co-workers in the bakery. They tell him to dance and then abandon him, Charlie does not know that they are making fun of him because of his low intelligence. The discriminations that the society had against people who are different are shown through Charlie’s experiences. The society in the story “The Chrysalids” treat people who are different in a cruel way that the society nowaday would not do
