*The Marble Statue is a fairy tale novella written by Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff. In the Marble Statue the main character, Florio, travels to a little town called Lucca, Italy. In this little town he meets a lot of people, such as his idol Fortunato. Fortunato is a person that enjoys singing and is a very happy man. Florio goes to a park where he sees a lot of impression and flowers that make it seem like its spring. However in the reality they are completely polar opposites. Fortunato is trying to help Florio out, while Donati, on the other hand, is trying to lead him to misfortune. Throughout the novella Donati set Florio up to get tangled up with Venus. In a way, Fortunato represented good, while Donati represented evil. Another comparison that can be made is their appearances. Fortunato appears to wear a colorful costume, and he wore a golden chain. Donati was a tall, slim cavalier, he also has a chain but it was greenish gold. The colors of the chain are a motif, because Donati chain color can represent evil while Fortunato’s chain color can represent good. Since both men are wearing gold jewelry, it can be interpreted, as both these guys are rich. This means that they are nobleman. Florio was also a nobleman. We can assume this because he had a servant, and only nobleman had servants back than. Noblemen were at the top of the social hierarchy. Therefore these three men are of similar social status so they all will tend to respect one another’s opinions.
