2. The place where Grendel lives differ greatly compared to Herot. Grendel lives with his mother and their home is very secretive, black mist and even trees grow out of the lake. The water is murky and is difficult to determine where the bottom of the lake is.“They live in secret places, windy Cliffs, wolf-dens where water pours from the rocks, then runs underground, where mist steams like black clouds, and the groves of trees growing out over the lake are all covered with frozen spray… at night that lake burns like a torch. No one knows its bottom” (550-3). This quote help gives the reader a better visual perspective of what a horrible place that Grendel and his mother live in. In contrast, Herot is very lively with music and was lit with lights from the sun and moon. “Loud in that hall, the harp’s rejoicing call and poet’s clear songs, sung of the ancient beginnings of us all...Then proudly setting the sun and moon to glow across the land and lit it” (4-10). These lines show the differences between Grendel’s home and Herot. Heorot is a far better place to live in rather than Grendel’s home

Anglo-Saxon society holds dear the ideals of loyalty and bravery. Although these attributes are important to have in the Anglo-Saxon society, Beowulf’s men abandoned him and left him to die. “...His brave and noble / Followers; they ran for their lives, fled / Deep in a wood.
