Martin Luther King Jr. once said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. King’s meaning of the quote is that someone’s actions can determine who they are as a person depending on the situation. Therefore, not everyone acts the same all the time. From reading “Hamlet” and “Lord of the Flies “Ralph, Hamlet, and Fortinbras all show greatness in their own way. These characters also face challenges and controversy’s which brings out the hidden true colors inside of who they really are. In the novel “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph faced many challenges and controversy’s which led to who he really was in the end. Being the leader of the group it was Ralph’s job to make sure the boys were on task and doing what they were supposed to do. Not only did he want organization in the group, but he also wanted civilization. His way of doing this started out with the conch. “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking” (Golding45).The conch represented togetherness, organization, and civilization. ”We shall be rescued” (Golding51). Ralph, Hamlet, and Fortinbras all face challenges and controversy’s which brings out their hidden true colors. They each took action in some way which led to greatness. Poison was a symbol of death therefore, not only did Hamlet face poison, but Ralph and Fortinbras faced poison as well. Even though they did not die in the end they faced it. Ralph faced challenges toward poison when Jack tried to kill him. Fortinbras faced challenges toward poison when he risked his life and took that chance to march on Poland.
