The poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes, and the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, both share the similar theme of neglection. For instance, Harlem reflects on dreams by comparing them to raisins, and writes “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run?”(Hughes 1).
